Dicen que también corriendo se gana y, literalmente, era lo que yo hacía. Cuando un carro se paraba o disminuía la velocidad a la orilla de la glorieta, enseguida yo corría para abordar a sus tripulantes y ofrecer nuestro servicio como El Mariachi Santa Isabel.
Las botas de charol y el sombrero colgando de mi cuello no ayudan mucho para pegar la carrera, pero créanme que después de acostumbrarse a ellos, uno agarra la agilidad que se necesita para ganarles a los otros músicos que también corren velozmente al encuentro.
Y es que para asegurar la chuleta hay que hacer más allá de sólo permanecer parado mostrando la guitarra o el violín, esperando a que caiga el cliente; por lo contrario, al cliente se le debe de insistir, de convencer, si es posible hasta cantarle una probadita, “las llaves de mi alma”, “cielo rojo” o “hermoso cariño”, por mencionarles algunas, para que escuche la calidad de los músicos y contrate con gusto.
Pero para haber llegado a esto, es decir, para ya pertenecer a un grupo de mariachi consolidado, tocar un instrumento y cantar, se tiene que pasar por años de aprendizaje. Para los que no saben que hay detrás de un músico, quiero comentarles que existe todo un proceso de estudio que va desde la lectura de la partitura, hasta el solfeo y muchas cosas más. Aunque, en la actualidad hay una gran cantidad de músicos denominados “líricos” que son los que de alguna manera aprendieron a tocar algún instrumento o a cantar sin haber estudiado música, como es el caso de un servidor. Me atrevo a señalar que la gran mayoría de los mariachis que hay, sí tienen conocimientos básicos en las cuestiones musicales.
La vida del mariachi se vuelve un tanto complicada porque ya no cualquiera los contrata debido al elevado costo que aparentemente representa. La realidad es que si la gente meditara un poco respecto a que esa cantidad de dinero se divide entre los integrantes de la agrupación, entonces vería que el pago se vuelve irrisorio, ya que no es más de lo que se gasta una persona en una salida al cine. Y si a todo esto le agregamos el costo de los trajes, el calzado, los sombreros, que dicho sea de paso, no son nada baratos, entonces la ganancia es aún menor. Y esto sin dejar de lado el transporte que es otro de los gastos fuertes del mariachi, ya que suele hacerse en camionetas grandes que consumen una gran cantidad de combustible. De esta manera la ganancia del mariachi se reduce considerablemente.
Un mariachi que cuenta con 12 elementos siempre tendrá que elevar su costo por obvias razones, pero garantiza que la interpretación de sus canciones tendrá mayor calidad, porque contará con más instrumentos musicales y las canciones se escucharán casi como las originales, sobre todo cuando el o los cantantes saben cantar como se debe. Por el contrario un mariachi que sólo se componga de seis o menos elementos estará muy limitado en cuanto a la calidad musical. Sin embargo, para todos hay gustos y presupuestos, ¡digo! hay hasta quien se ofrece como solista y canta con pista.
La cuestión es que detrás de lo que la gente ve en una glorieta, calle o plaza, existe todo un proceso para que el mariachi se presente a las reuniones a alegrar los corazones de quienes lo escuchan. Aunque sabemos que este tipo de músicos no sólo se presenta en fiestas y eventos sociales, hay ocasiones que también asiste a funerales o entierros.
Yo les quiero compartir mi experiencia como integrante del único mariachi al que pertenecí y del cual guardo increíbles recuerdos.
Sucedió una ocasión que sentado en las jardineras de la universidad, escuché a un compañero de nombre Francisco que tocaba una vihuela. Siempre que escucho cualquier instrumento musical en vivo me llama demasiado la atención porque soy un amante de la música viva, toco la guitarra y canto desde los 13 años, aunque debo aclararles que lo hago de manera amateur porque nunca estudié el instrumento ni tomé clases de canto, lo que aprendí fue a través de la experiencia.
Ya había observado a aquel compañero que solía tocar dicho instrumento rodeado de un grupo de estudiantes que estaban muy atentos a las melodías. Mi curiosidad fue en ascenso y terminé por acercarme para platicar con este personaje que después se volvería mi jefe dentro de El Mariachi Santa Isabel.
Ese día platicamos por corto tiempo ya que debíamos regresar cada uno a su clase, pero fue el inicio de una buena amistad y de una experiencia muy gratificante en mi vida, ¡digo!, no cualquiera puede decir que ha formado parte de un mariachi sin tener los conocimientos al respecto.
Regresé todos los días a la misma hora a aquella jardinera con la intención de escuchar como tocaba, algunas veces la vihuela y otras la trompeta, al mismo tiempo hacía el intento de cantar con una voz terriblemente desastrosa, literalmente como el personaje de Alfalfa de aquella serie Una pandilla de pillos o como Guillermín de Los Pitufos, que para quien es muy joven y no conoce a estos personajes, eran reconocidos por cantar alto y totalmente desafinado.
Ya con unos días de conocernos y con un poco de confianza, una ocasión me atreví a decirle que su voz no era muy buena, traté de hacerlo con mucho tacto ya que a veces sin querer uno hiere susceptibilidades, de manera que mi comentario fue muy sutil.
—Me parece que esa canción podría escucharse mejor si la bajas un tono porque tú no lo alcanzas.
Se quedó un tanto sorprendido por mi comentario pero estaba dispuesto a comprobarlo, solo era cuestión de que me permitiera cantar la canción.
Esa vez hizo como que no me escuchó, pero estoy seguro de que retumbó en su mente porque para la siguiente ocasión que coincidimos en la jardinera me permitió cantar.
Lo que no sabía es que yo ya había estudiado las canciones que él solía tocar, así que aquella vez llevé mi instrumento y cuando llegué le propuse acompañarlo con la guitarra a cuestas y hacerle una segunda voz.
Antes de que empezara a tocar me dijo que él no cantaría, de manera que me cedía toda la responsabilidad, así fue que por primera vez me escuchó cantar. Debo aclararles que yo no sé cantar pero soy entonado, para ser más claro es necesario decirles que una persona que sabe cantar lo hace con la técnica y entonación necesaria, es decir la voz debe de salir desde la boca del estómago o el diafragma, con la respiración adecuada para atravesar por las cuerdas vocales y emitir un sonido sin lastimar la garganta. Esto se logra a través de horas diarias de entrenamiento, disciplina y constancia, o por lo menos eso me enseñaron. Yo soy de los que canta como puede porque nunca le he dedicado el tiempo necesario para hacerlo de la manera correcta, lo cual quiere decir que quizá no lo haga con la técnica correcta, pero al ser entonado la voz se disfraza de tal manera que muchas ocasiones pasa desapercibida esa mala técnica. Obviamente para quien sabe y conoce de música, es muy probable que detecte las deficiencias en el canto de quien no lo hace de manera correcta, pero para quien no sabe nada de esto, es posible que no lo note.
Aquella ocasión traté de cantar lo mejor que pude y no sé si canté bien o mal pero el caso es que algunos compañeros detuvieron su paso por la jardinera y se tomaron el tiempo de escucharnos. Una vez terminada la canción me dijo
—No cantas tan mal pero debes mejorar la técnica.
Eso ya lo sabía, de hecho él era el que ignoraba que yo no había estudiado canto, ni ningún instrumento de manera formal. Pero al principio nunca se lo dije, sólo me limité a cantar y tocar lo mejor que pude dando mi mayor esfuerzo. Posteriormente me comentó que era la cabeza de un grupo de mariachis que ofrecían sus servicios en la ahora alcaldía Iztapalapa.
Nos seguimos reuniendo en aquella jardinera por lapsos muy cortos aprovechando los recesos entre clases. Honestamente yo esperaba que me invitara algún día a cantar con su mariachi pero eso nunca sucedió. Y si la montaña no va a Mahoma, Mahoma va a la montaña, así que me planté frente a él y le dije que me invitara a cantar y tocar la guitarra en su mariachi sin que tuviera que pagarme, pues le hice notar que lo único que quería era saber qué se sentía formar parte de una agrupación de este tipo.
No muy convencido me dijo que me esperaba el siguiente sábado a las 3 de la tarde en su changarro, la única recomendación que me hizo fue que llevara camisa blanca y zapatos negros. Él tenía un local de alquiler de smokings y disfraces de toda ocasión. Cuando llegué ya tenía preparado un traje de mariachi que me prestó y quedó a la perfección.
Estaba realmente emocionado, me sentía como chambelán o algo por el estilo, no paraba de verme al espejo. Después de algunas recomendaciones, me dijo que yo sería quien iba a cantar las mañanitas, que generalmente es la canción con la que se da inicio.
Subimos a una camioneta vieja, de esas del tipo Misterio a la orden o Scooby Doo, nos trasladamos a la explanada comentada de la ahora alcaldía Iztapalapa donde ya nos esperaban los demás integrantes de la agrupación, que conmigo hacíamos un total de 10, dos mujeres y ocho hombres.
Tenían un evento ya programado a las 18:00 horas, de manera que aprovechamos el recorrido hacia el domicilio para presentarnos e intercambiar algunas palabras. Francisco les dijo que yo tocaría y cantaría solo algunas canciones. Ellos me trataron de lo mejor, lo que no sabían era que yo participaba por primera vez en esos menesteres y moría de los nervios, pero como buen mariachi me los iba aguantando, tratando de encajar en aquella agrupación que acababa de conocer.
Por fin llegamos al domicilio, era una casa con un patio largo al centro donde había viviendas por ambos lados. Nos recibió el señor de la casa y nos dijo que entraríamos cantando las mañanitas. Francisco me explicó.
—Tú entras al frente y nosotros te seguimos, tienes que llegar hasta donde está la festejada y cantarle casi de manera personalizada siempre viéndola a los ojos.
¡Dios mío! Si supiera que los pantalones se me caían de los nervios no me hubiera invitado, afortunadamente todo ocurrió muy rápido, empezaron a sonar los instrumentos y cuando tocó el turno canté como si ya lo hubiera hecho decenas de veces. La canción ayudó mucho puesto que “Las mañanitas” es una de las canciones más populares de México, así que no se me hizo muy difícil interpretarla.
Mis compañeros hicieron la segunda voz donde tenían que intervenir y todo salió bastante bien, hasta que después de los aplausos, porras y algarabía, la festejada pidió “Cielo Rojo” que es una de las canciones que yo llevaba preparada la cual tiene un alto grado de dificultad debido a que se canta con falsete, que es una variación en la voz que hace que se escuche como un pequeño brinco en la garganta. Como pude la libre pero creo que se me salieron algunos gallos.
Francisco hacía lo suyo y entre canción y canción decía chistes y frases que ya llevaba preparadas, e incluso me presentaba como la sensación del momento cuando yo no iba preparado para recibir los aplausos, halagos y cotorreos, honestamente me avergonzaba, pero trataba de disimularlo a toda costa y entrar en ambiente.
Esa primera vez superé la prueba ya que participé en tres eventos más que obviamente no me pagaron, pero yo estaba sumamente satisfecho de haber logrado cantar con mariachi sin haberlos contratado.
Fui varias ocasiones con ellos de manera gratuita hasta que Francisco empezó a pagarme. Me incluyó en su mariachi de manera formal como un integrante más, donde conocí a muchas personas y aprendí un montón de cosas respecto a esta noble profesión.
Los horarios del mariachi me permitían conservar mi empleo formal en una agencia de seguros, continuar con mis estudios y ahora dedicarme a una de las cosas que más me gusta hacer, cantar.
Fueron bastantes las experiencias tocando en bodas, quince años, cumpleaños, días de la madre y del padre, aniversarios etc. Pero la que nunca voy a olvidar fue una ocasión que asistimos a una casa antigua, contratados por una señorita que le llevaba serenata a su padre.
Esa ocasión entramos de manera muy sigilosa, casi sin hacer ruido lo cual no era raro ya que el mariachi debe de ser una sorpresa para quien va a recibir la serenata; sin embargo, ese día la sorpresa me la llevé yo.
Entramos a esta vivienda donde había mucho espacio en la sala y cabíamos perfectamente. En el lugar yacían cuatro personas, que ahora sé, eran los hijos del señor y su esposa que ya nos esperaban. La señorita contratante me pidió que aguardáramos un momento más hasta que trajeran a su padre. Para ese entonces yo cantaba la mayoría de las canciones y ya había cumplido un año como integrante del mariachi. Ella salió de una habitación dirigiéndose directamente hacia mí
—Por favor quiero que le cante a mi padre todas las canciones que le pida, pero tendrá que acercarse mucho hacia él porque ya casi no se escucha su voz, tiene cáncer en fase terminal y se esfuerza mucho para hablar. Le encantan los mariachis, es su deseo escucharlos antes de que parta de este mundo.
Sacaron al señor en una silla de ruedas, su aspecto era cadavérico debido al cáncer que lo aquejaba. Inmediatamente se me quebró el alma al recordar que mi padre murió en las mismas circunstancias, los ojos se me nublaron y la voz se me quebró. Pero el show debía continuar, así que me acerqué al señor que, en tono casi inaudible, me pidió la de «Ella» de José Alfredo y me dijo que se la dedicara a su esposa. Empecé a cantar como jamás en mi vida lo había hecho, con todas las ganas del mundo. No pude evitar llorar entre canción y canción al grado que mis compañeros me hacían señas para que recobrara la cordura.
Seguía acercándome a él entre cada canción para escucharlo, la realidad es que me daban ganas de abrazarlo y darle ánimos, pero eso solo lo pensaba y seguía cantando hasta que concluyó la hora de servicio.
Cuando nos despedimos me acerqué por última vez a él y susurrando me dijo, ¡gracias!, canta usted muy bien, y me regaló una sonrisa desdibujada que solo con un gran esfuerzo pudo hacer. Yo salí llorando del domicilio sin importarme lo que mis compañeros pensaran, ¡total! Ya habría tiempo para explicarles las emociones y sentimientos que en esos momentos recorrían todo mi ser.
Las circunstancias de la vida hicieron que dejara esa actividad para incursionar en nuevos proyectos, pero desde entonces respeto mucho la vida del mariachi. Uno no sabe lo que hay detrás de todo esto hasta que lo vive.

Cuando algo se hace con pasión siempre deja buen sabor de boca, aunque como en este caso no haya habido una remuneración, el pago queda implícito en esa sensación de satisfacción que a veces no se puede describir.
Cantar es una de las cosas que mas disfruto hacer y aunque no soy profesional siempre lo hago con mucha pasión.

Muy interesante saber cuáles fueron sus inicios en la música, y saber que cuando existe amor por esta actividad, es casi casi sín interés por recibir una remuneración, generalmente un músico no vive sólo de eso, tiene q tener una o dos activides extra para poder mantener un hogar, para un músico el pago más importante es una sonrisa y el aplauso de quien lo escucha.

Amigo desconocia tus inicios en ese grupo musical, aun recuerdo la primera vez que te vi vestido de mariachi me dio mucha emocion ya que se cuanto te apasiona la musica.
